QMI completed the 1st project secondment in Shanghai, June 2017
Queen Mary Innovation Ltd. (based at Queen Mary University of London), together with Shanghai Technology and Innovation Centre (SHTIC) and Italy’s National Research Council (CNR) were awarded a Horizon2020-MSCA-RISE-2017 grant to facilitate research and innovation in the biomaterials field.
This grant supports inter-sectorial and international knowledge exchange and developing new professional skills in researchers and managerial staff.
Dr Xuanye Gu was seconded to Shanghai Technology Innovation Centre (SHTIC) in June 2017 as the first QMI secondee. He was supervised and hosted by Ms Cathy Zheng, Vice Director of the Exchange & Cooperation Department, SHTIC.
During the secondment, Xuanye worked with both SHTIC and Shanghai Co-Way International Technology Transfer Centre in a highly interactive working environment, aiming to understand joint technology transfer activities between the two countries. He was based in Co-Way’s office and had several meetings with Co-Way to understand the potential of prototyping biomaterials in China.
Xuanye participated in several events during his secondment, including the “Congress of China 1987-2017 Entrepreneurship Incubation for 30 years”. Several meetings were held at SHTIC and site visit to an incubator in Shanghai helped QMI to better understand the similarities and differences of the innovation systems between China and the UK. Xuanye also visited local investment companies and incubators to discuss about technology transfer and commercialisation opportunities of a QMUL biomaterial project in China.
Xuanye’s main activities during his secondment include:
• Meeting with Tainye Group (a health sector investor in Shanghai) and Baichuan Yihui (an innovation institute and angel fund investor in Shanghai) to discuss about commercialisation opportunities of a QMUL biomaterial project in China.
• Meetings with SHTIC and Co-Way to share knowledge on the UK and Chinese innovation platforms.
• Collected information on biomaterials, additive manufacturing, entrepreneurship and innovation systems.
• A business trip to XJTLU (Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University) in Suzhou to discuss about QMI’s technology transfer project.
• Visited Shanghai Zhangjiang Innovation Park to understand about their research interests and functioning in Shanghai.
• Attended a roundtable meeting with ERICENA delegates, hosted by SHTIC.
The secondment was successfully completed with an eventful agenda and generated project ideas for QMI, SHTIC and Co-Way to continually engage throughout the H2020 project.
